This house is prominently sited on an elevated corner lot and is the most imposing residence in downtown Fayette. An L-plan I-house with five-bay façade; originally had double-tiered portico across three-fifths of the façade, replaced with monumental columns in 1916 remodeling. Despite this alteration, the house is architecturally significance as one of the earliest and more finely finished Greek Revival residences in Jefferson County. In 1842 the house became the home of Charles Clarke (1810-1877), who served as Governor of Mississippi from 1863 to 1865. This house was listed on the National Register on 3 August 1987. |
