Built in 1926, the year that Hinds County Agricultural high School was reorganized as Hinds Junior College, Cain Hall served as the administration building for the college, containing offices, classrooms, the library, and an auditorium. Originally called the Administration Building, its name was changed in 1982 to honor the former college president George Judson Cain. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 24 January 1991, and it was listed on the National Register on 10 March 1997. Not quite a year later, on 7 March 1988, Cain Hall was destroyed by a fire. It was subsequently delisted from Mississippi Landmark status on 2 Apr 1998, and it was delisted from the National Register on 15 December 1999. This building is included in "The State of Mississippi – Historic Properties" (1982) (p. 8), and it is mentioned in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.279, in the listing for Hinds Community College, JM77). |
