Built about 1930-31, the North Manor Apartments building is one of the oldest remaining apartment buildings in the city of Jackson. Along with several other nearby apartment buildings that were built around the same time, it reflects the rapid growth and urbanization of Jackson in the 1920s and early 1930s and the growing need for housing for young professionals working in the city. It also reflects changes in residential preferences at the time, shifting away from traditional boarding houses and toward private apartments. This apartment complex originally consisted of two buildings that mirrored each other on either side of a central courtyard, but the building on the south side was demolished sometime in the 1970s or early 1980s. This remaining building was listed on the National Register on 3 March 1995. The nomination was prepared by Kelly Griffin. |
