The Garner Wynn Green House is significant as one of the few remaining fine Neoclassical structures in Jackson, for its being a part of a nucleus of historic houses left in downtown Jackson, and for its association with the Green family. A distinguished pioneer family, the Greens have been pivotal in the history of Jackson for five generations. They were one of five or six families who developed Jackson in the early 1830s. It was originally located across the street at 647 North State Street, but it was threatened with demolition at that location, so it was moved to its present location in February 1987 in order to save it. This house was listed on the National Register on 31 October 1985, and it was designated a Mississippi Landmark, upon owner request, on 16 February 1987. It is included in "Jackson Landmarks" (1982) (p. 104), "The Majesty of Eastern Mississippi and the Coast" (2004) (p. 53), and "Jackson's North State Street (Images of America)" (2009) (pp. 48, 100). |
