Context/Comments
The Battle of Big Black River Bridge was fought on 17 May 1863, the next day after the Battle of Champion Hill, as Confederate forces withdrew toward Vicksburg.

A large part of the site of the battle, encompassing about 1450 acres, was listed on the National Register on 23 November 1971, but the American Battlefield Protection Program has recommended that the boundaries be changed to take in a larger area.
