Begun in 1927 as the residence of James M. Sherman (1854-1937), this house was completed in 1945 by his daughter, Jessie Gundlach.

The building was listed as element #94 in the Scenic Drive Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 7 May 1979.

It is included in "The Majesty of Eastern Mississippi and the Coast" (2004) (p. 78) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 340, GC12).
