Context/Comments
The Gulfport Post Office, planned in 1907 and built in 1909-10, was designed and built under the direction of James Knox Taylor (1857-1929), Supervising Architect of the Treasury from 1897 to 1912. It is one of the finest examples of the Italian Renaissance style in Mississippi.

This building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 19 March 1984. It was not included in the (old) Harbor Square Historic District, but it was later included as element #1 in the (new) Gulfport Harbor Square Commercial Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 25 October 2011.

It is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp. 342-343, GC16).

Historic Information
There is information about this building in the "Annual Report of the Supervising Architect to the Secretary of the Treasury for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1909" (1909) (p. 126), which states that a site had been secured by that time and that a contract for the construction of the building “will be awarded shortly.” The "Annual Report of the Supervising Architect to the Secretary of the Treasury for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1918" (1918) (p. 180), says that the building was completed and occupied in 1910.
