This building was the medical office of Dr. Gilbert Mason, an African American physician who was a prominent in the Civil Rights Movement in Biloxi. Mason was one of the leaders of the "Wade-In" on the whites-only Biloxi beach in 1959, and his previous office was firebombed. Later in his career, Mason was the first African American member of the Board of Trustees for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. It was listed on the National Register on 28 September 2017. The building included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 352, GC32). |
