The City of Mound Bayou, Bolivar County, Mississippi was founded in 1887 by freed slaves. Over the years the City has expanded and contracted due to changing economic conditions. The district constitutes a roughly eleven block ares situated in the historic downtown core and is anchored by Edwards Street, (formerly U.S. 61), which serves as the primary north-south street. The district consist of a mixture of residential, commercial, and governmental, and religious buildings, almost all of which were built in a vernacular style. |
