The Southern Christian Institute was formed in 1882 by the Home Missionary Society of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the intent to educate African-American ministers and Bible teachers. The program expanded to include elementary, high school and college courses. Located on the grounds of Col. McKinney L. Cook’s plantation, the school originally used Cook’s “Mansion House” as the main school building. Additional buildings were constructed by students from lumber harvested on the property and sawed in the school’s sawmill. In 1953, the school merged with nearby Tougaloo College. In 1962 and 1963, the SCI campus was the site of statewide training for civil rights workers under the direction of SNCC field secretary Bob Moses and Bernice Robinson. The AME Church acquired the campus in 1971 and operated the Bonner-Campbell School of Religion. The historic campus has eight contributing structures built between 1900 and 1935. The National Register nomination was written by Nancy Bell, executive director of the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation.
