The Meridian Downtown Historic District comprises the area roughly bounded by 26th Avenue, 18th Avenue, 6th Street and Front Street. It combines the previously listed Union Station Historic District and the Meridian Urban Center Historic District and incorporates additional resources in Downtown Meridian and includes 123 resources. The commercial buildings in the district reflect a number of architectural styles popular during the period of significance, c.1870-1956, including Italianate, Romanesque, Italian Renaissance, Art Deco and the International Style. The district contains one of the largest concentrations of commercial buildings from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century in the state. The National Register nomination was written by Gene and Linda Ford, consultants, and Todd Sanders, MDAH architectural historian.
