Comments:
The Alcorn State University Historic District is significant to the state's political and architectural history, and to the nation's educational history. The Mississippi Legislature created Alcorn University on May 31, 1871, as the first land grant school for blacks in the United States. Its first president Hiram Revels, was the first African American to serve in the United States Senate and the President's House, a fine example of the Federal style, is the only structure still standing in Mississippi known to have been occupied by him. The Greek Revival chapel is one of the most significant examples of that style in the state. Twentieth-century Colonial Revival buildings were designed by prominent Mississippi architects C.H. Lindsley and E.L. Malvaney.
