The eight farm buildings erected by Will Dockery and his workers in the period between 1900 and 1930 remain a fine (and now rare) example of early 20th-century Mississippi plantation construction. Dockery Farms is the cradle of Delta blues music, beginning with Charley Patton, who developed his distinctive style while employed there as a farm worker. Patton taught other Dockery workers and influenced other noted blues performers, including Jake Martin, Willie Brown and Son House. The National Register nomination was written by William Lester, Executive Director of the Dockery Farms Foundation. |
