Larmour, Jacob (b.1822 - d.1901) |
Builder/Architect, Canton, MS |
See figures 3, 13, 44 in Hinkle, Guild & Co.'s Plans of Buildings . . . . Newspaper article about Grace Church, Canton, mentions "Jacob Larmoon" as contractor for the church. This is probably a misspelling of "Larmour." Signature of "Jacob Larmour" appears on specification for construction of the church and parsonage. See Canton _The American Citizen_, May 27, and June 24, 1854, for Larmour advertisement: "J. Larmour, Architect & Builder. Residence Canton, Madison County, Mississippi. Plans drawn on reasonable terms to the Swiss, Italian, Elizabethan, Norman, and Old English styles. Always prepared to take contract for those who wish a good building." In 1857, begins to advertise as "architect & superintendent" (see Sept. 24).
According to _Austin: Its Architects and Architecture (1836-1986)_, Larmour was born in Hackensack, NJ, and first practiced architecture in NYC (1844-c.1850). He moved to Jackson, MS, in 1853, and after moving to Indianapolis (where he is listed as "Architect" in the 1865 City Directory) and Minneapolis he finally settled in Austin, TX, in 1871. He was named state architect for Texas in 1879, and until his retirement in 1900, he practiced in partnership with several other architects. In Texas, he designed many courthouses and other public buildings, commercial buildings, and fine residences. He was a charter member of the Texas State Association of Architects in 1886. |
