Marshall & Fox (1905-1926)
Architect, Chicago, IL
Firm composed of Benjamin Marshall and Charles E. Fox. Marshall was born in Chicago in 1874--he had no formal training in architecture, but after a brief apprenticeship, he became a partner in the firm of Marble & Wilson. He began practicing independently after a long European trip in 1902, and in 1905, he formed a long-lasting partnership with Charles E. Fox, as Marshall & Fox. The firm became best known for the many high-rise luxury apartments and hotels they designed as developers on the Chicago waterfront. Marshall was the designer of the two, while Fox specialized in project and construction management. Fox died in 1926, after which Marshall again practiced alone, until his retirment in 1935. Many of the firm's drawings and office papers are located at the University of Texas Architectural Archives at Austin. See "Marshall, Benjamin H." in Biographical Dictionary of American Architects (Deceased), p. 392-393.
