One of the most substantial and elaborate of the vacation homes constructed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast during the early peak period of the area's popularity in the 1850s. Important as a sophisticated blend of academic and regional design elements, practically executed with the best available local building materials. The entire complex was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and a casino barge on 29 August 2005. It was individually listed on the National Register on 5 November 1976. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 10 June 1987. This house is included in "Shrines to Yesterday" (1968); "Historic Architecture in Mississippi" (1973) (pp.92-93, as "Woodlawn"); "Maritime Biloxi (Images of America)" (2000) (p. 20); "Great Houses of Mississippi" (2004) (pp.54-56); and "Biloxi (Images of America)" (2009) (p. 69).
