Tuscan-column, marble pergola dedicated to pioneering cattle entrepreneur W.J. Davis, who founded LaVernet Stock Farm in Hinds County, shelters a marble water fountain (not currently functional) in the southwestern corner of Smith Park. Quotations include “The Man Who Led Where Others Groped,” “Merchant, Banker, Manufacturer,” and “Erected by His Friends to Commemorate the Useful Life of a Great Leader and Upbuilder.” A marble bench sits to the west of the monument.
