The Winterville Mounds complex is a large Mississippian Period ceremonial site. It represents the zenith of prehistoric developments in this part of the Mississippi Valley. It was here that the initial contact occurred between the Plaquemine Culture to the south and the Mississippian Culture to the north. Most of the mounds on the site were probably constructed somewhere between 1200-1400 A.D. The site is administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The Winterville Mounds complex was listed on the National Register on 17 August 1973, and was designated a National Historic Landmark on 14 September 1993. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 1 May 1986. The site is included in "Old Homes of Mississippi, Volume II: Columbus and the North" (1977) (p. 148) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.111, DR21). |
