The Merchants and Farmers Bank derives its significance from its architectural character. Its Richardsonian Romanesque features, its stone construction, and its pressed-metal interior are all rare in Mississippi. It was one of three banks chartered in 1897. The bank building was constructed in 1903 and is unaltered. The most notable feature of the building is its surprisingly intact interior. This building was listed on the National Register on 14 May 1987, and it was later included as a "previously listed" element (element #120) in the Okolona Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 5 February 2002. It collapsed following a band of heavy storms in the early morning hours of 17 November 2015. |
