Believed to be the oldest stadium in Mississippi, Watkins Stadium opened for use in October 1930. As originally built in 1930, the stands were made of wood and were manufactured by Mose Winkler of Meridian and the box department of the Eastman, Gardiner & Co., but a 1937-39 WPA (or possibly PWA) project built the concrete stands as seen today. It is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 311, PW18). |
