Context/Comments
Built in 1938, this post office building was designed and built under the direction of Louis A. Simon (1867-1958), Supervising Architect of the Treasury from 1933 to 1939. It contains a mural by Stuart Purser, completed and installed in 1940.

This building has the same design as the post office in Durant, Mississippi. This design was also used for used for the post office in Lampasas, Texas (1938). Essentially the same design was used for the 1930s post office buildings in Ashburn, Georgia (c.1938-39), Louisville, Georgia (c.1938-39), and Clarion, Iowa (1939), except that they have a railed “area” in front of basement windows.

The post office building in Leland was individually listed on the National Register on 21 April 1983. It was later included as a previously-listed element (element #9) in the the Leland Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 12 October 2004.

Brief Description
A hip-roofed, one-story building, clad in taupe-colored brick, with modest Georgian Revival detailing. At the center of the roof ridge is a small cupola.
