Context/Comments
The largest and most powerful steam towboat ever constructed, the Sprague was also significant for its role in the development of commerce and transportation during the first quarter of the twentieth century. It symbolized the great era of river trade in the United States. In the early 1980s it burned after some years of deterioration.

It had been listed on the National Register in 1977, but it was delisted in 1987 after its destruction.
