The most architecturally significant of the post-Civil War commercial buildings in downtown Natchez. Its merit is based on extraordinary integrity and a high degree of exterior finish. Founded in 1849, Dixon's is the second-oldest business firm in Natchez, and the firm's ledgers and business papers constitute the single most important written source for studying the interior decoration of the city's nineteenth-century buildings. This building was individually listed on the National Register on 30 May 1979, and it was later included as element #286 in the Natchez-on-Top-of-the-Hill Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 17 September 1979. It is included in the "Natchez Walking Guide" (1985) (#84, p.66) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.34, ND27). |
