This building is one of Mississippi’s most notable Greek Revival public buildings. It ceased to be used as the as the county courthouse when the present courthouse was completed in 1939. It was designated a National Historic Landmark (and thereby concurrently listed on the National Register) on 23 May 1968. It was later included as a previously-listed element (element #15) in the Grove Street-Jackson Street Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 21 November 2007. The building was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 5 March 1986.
