Context/Comments
A galleried cottage, built about 1833, with a gable-roofed galleried addition along one side, built in 1901. The two sections effectively merge two architectural styles: the late Federal and the Colonial Revival. The original portion has seven-bay fenestration on the main (south) façade, which is stuccoed and scored, and incorporates such Adamesque details as elliptical arches and classically inspired Tuscan columns reminiscent of Jeffersonian porticoes on its five-bay gallery. The 1901 addition features the gables and pedimented forms of the Georgian Revival. In the 1930s, the property was the subject of national publicity in connection with the murder of the owner, a member of families long prominent in Natchez history.

This house was listed on the National Register on 19 December 1978, with 4.65 acres of surrounding land.

It is included in "The Great Houses of Natchez" (1986) (p. 42), "Natchez Images, 1880-1960" (2002) (p. 55), "Natchez: Houses and History …" (2003) (pp. 200-203), and "Louisiana Architecture 1820-1840" (2005) (pp. 241-242).
