Context/Comments
Erected in 1923 according to the design of N.W Overstreet, with later additions made in 1937 by the firm of Overstreet and Town, the Old Canton High School building is a well-preserved two-story public school building of brick construction that incorporates the horizontality of the Prairie Style with eclectic detailing that shows Jacobean Revival influence on the original part of the building (particularly in the diamond-patterned brickwork of the upper façade) and Art Moderne influence on the 1937 addition. The building was listed on the National Register on 5 November 1998, and it was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 17 July 2001.
Brief Description
A two-story brick building that faces west. Formerly used as a public school, it has been converted into a multi-family apartment building. It has a flat roof behind a brick and cast stone parapet. The building is clad in dark red brick with cast stone accents. The façade of the horizontally-oriented building is broken up by repeated vertical two story piers. The façade is also broken up by three prominent entrances. The windows are 12-over-12 wood DHS with marginal glazing.
