Context/Comments
This building is a relatively rare surviving example of a small town railroad passenger depot of the early years of the twentieth century. It was built about 1906 as the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad depot at Monticello. In December 1929 the NOGN was acquired by the Gulf, Mobile, and Northern Railroad (GM&N), which subsequently consolidated with the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in 1940 to form the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad (GM&O). In 1978 the GM&O merged with the Illinois Central Railroad, which was later acquired by the Canadian National Railroad. This building served as a passenger depot until passenger service on this line was discontinued in 1954, and it housed freight operations until 1971.

This building was listed on the National Register on 31 October 1995. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 28 March 1985.
