This 3-story brick theater was added to the Hotel Pinehurst (demolished 1988), a grand hotel once dominating the heart of the central business district. The former theater survives as the Little Theater. The theater is rectangular with a flat roof. Its northeast corner is chamfered. The theater features subtle influences of Classical and Arabian revival. Its façade (east) lacks windows. A 1story bay entry vestibule projects from the façade. It features a reverse Ogee arch parapet with a cast concrete cap and panels. A two-leaf door with segmental arch transom is set within the vestibule. It is topped by a cast concrete, reverse ogee arch lintel with keystone. A vertical brick course separates the first two floors. Above the entry vestibule is a large, Classical cast concrete feature including paired Corinthian columns, a flat entablature, and an interior segmental arch panel. “Laurel Little Theater” is carved in the entablature. The historic “Arabian” neon sign is attached to the façade. The chamfered corner on the northeast contains a 2(V)-over-2(V) DH wood sash window and 6-light casement. At the west end of the north elevation is a matching neon sign. |
