Designed by the architectural firm of Sanguinet, Staats & Hedrick of Fort Worth, Texas, in association with N.W. Overstreet of Jackson, this remarkable “Commercial Gothic” skyscraper was built in 1924-25 to house the offices of the Lamar Life Insurance Company. It is listed as a contributing element (element #5) in the in the Smith Park Architectural District, which was placed on the National Register on 23 March 1976. This building is included in "Jackson Landmarks" (1982) (p. 42), "Jackson (Images of America)" (1998) (p. 13), "The Majesty of Eastern Mississippi and the Coast" (2004) (p. 47), and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 244, JM20). It is also pictured in "Chimneyville: Likenesses’ of Early Days in Jackson, Mississippi" (2007) (pp. 123, 127). |
