| A two-story wood-frame Greek Revival house with galleries on both stories that extend across the east and west ends of the building as well as the south facade. The galleries were supported by a colonnade of box columns. The house was built for Dr. Hiram Alexander Roberts, surgeon and planter. From 1904-1950, it was the home of Joseph William Milner, who achieved major public improvements for Gulfport during his lengthy mayoralty. House was converted to a public use in the latter half of the 20th century, owned by the City and used for both private and public events. This building was destroyed completely by Hurricane Katrina on 29 August 2005. The house was listed on the National Register on 31 July 1972, and was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 20 May 1986. It was awarded an HPF grant of $20,000 in 1977. After it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it was delisted from the National Register on 16 July 2008. A reconstruction of the house (047-GLF-2256.2-ML) was later built on the same site as the original house. [HABS: MS-168 (1978)] |
