Built about 1880, the house at 5098 Highway 604 is a rural vernacular Greek Revival planter's cottage, a house form that represents a fusion of Creole and American building traditions. The center hall-double pile plan is the American contribution while the undercut galleries are derived from Creole and Caribbean traditions. This house is is the only surviving residence in the Pearlington area from the 1880s or earlier. All other historic residences in the small community of Pearlington have disappeared due to demolition or disaster. The house at 5098 Highway 604 was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but was later restored. It was listed on the National Register on 19 January 2016, from a nomination prepared by consultant Tricia Nelson. |
